Sometimes we have a strong desire to go somewhere but we have little time. That can make choosing a destination even more challenging.

You don’t want to spend all of your vacation time in the skies, so you want to narrow your list down to somewhere relatively close.

Europe is probably out of the question. Hawaii might be a bit too far. Some places in the Caribbean may be worth your time, but what about the largest city in North America?

That would be Mexico City, better known as Mexico City. This thriving metropolis will leave travelers wanting more, which is why I keep coming back.

I recently finished my sixth trip to this amazing city and my cup is still not full. Are here 7 reasons why Mexico City is my favorite place for a weekend getaway:

Easy access

Mexico City is located towards the center of Mexico, so it is reasonable to say that it is less than a 4.5 hour direct flight from many US airports.

Most major US airlines (and Air Canada) fly direct to Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX).

Once you land, it’s very easy to get to the city center. Walk outside, turn left and take the subway for less than a dollar.

Cheap airfare + cheap transportation to get me right into the heart of a stunning city is money well spent if you ask me.

Is « Taco Tuesday” all day every day

If you come to Mexico City without eating tacos, especially street tacos, you are doing it wrong! You would have to walk blindfolded not to notice how many taco stands there are in town.

They are everywhere, and most of them tend to be busy, which is a good sign that they are delicious and safe to eat.

At home, it’s common to find restaurants with a « Taco Tuesday » special. In Mexico City, that’s just everyday life.

Street vendors often offer fresh and affordable tacos of different varieties. My personal favorite is a draw between Al Pastor and Suadero.

So many neighborhoods to explore

Mexico City is so big that I have been there 6 times and I always find a new place to explore. Many travelers find themselves in the tourist area known as the Zócalo, with striking architecture, high-end retail stores, and a variety of restaurants.

I love going through the Zócalo and using that as a compass to venture to another place.

chinatown mexico city

During my last trip, I wandered down a nearby side street after spotting some unexpected Chinese lanterns and found myself in the middle of a quaint Chinatown (Barrio Chino) that I instantly fell in love with.

Fresh and tasty dumplings were being made in the narrow alley along cool shops to pay within a 2 block radius.

Good weather all year

As one might suspect, I have a travel itch year-round. No matter what month it is, you don’t have to think twice before visiting Mexico City.

Some months you can wear shorts, others it may be better to pack a sweater, but it will never be overwhelmingly hot as it is not a beach destination.

According spark of time, Mexico City varies between 43 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. It rarely goes below 37 or above 86.

Worth

Mexico City is a fun place to spend the night on the weekends. You don’t have to break the bank to do it.

In a posh neighborhood like Polanco, visitors can enjoy the finer things in life and not worry as much about the bill as they would at a similar establishment in the US.

All the same food, drink and entertainment in the United States – you can enjoy it at a better price here. Traffic can be a big problem, but the subway and Uber are great ways to get around.

The metro is very efficient and it is easy to read the maps provided at each station. Ubers are relatively cheap; it is better not to take them during peak hours.

easy to keep busy

There is always something fun or interesting to do or see. Whether it’s taking a train to the quaint town of Xochimilico for a one-of-a-kind boat ride or getting lost in a bustling market, your mind will be occupied.

Mexico City will keep you busy and you will be able to make the most of your time without worrying about the stress of your home. That’s the reason for a weekend getaway, right?

Security

Statistically, Mexico City is a very safe destination. Petty crimes can happen anywhere, but I’ve been out all the time and have never felt unsafe or seen violence.

Currently, the US state department has included Mexico City in Tier 2: Exercise Greater Caution, aligning itself with many other popular destinations.
