It’s about to be easier than ever to get directly to Tulum, Mexico from the United States and Canada.

This winter, Aeroméxico will launch three new routes from cities in the U.S. and Canada to the brand-new Tulum International Airport.

Tulum Beach

Opening on December 1, 2023, Tulum International Airport is set to make this popular Riviera Maya beach destination more accessible than ever before.

Currently, travelers must fly into Cancun, which is several hours to the north of Tulum. But the new airport will be located just 12.5 miles (20 kilometers) from Tulum, making it easy to arrive directly.

The following three flights will be the first to allow American and Canadian travelers direct access to Tulum.

New Flights Launching To Tulum

Beginning December 1, 2023, Aeroméxico will launch new flights to Tulum to coincide with the opening of the new international airport.

Travelers will be able to fly nonstop from two cities in the United States: San Francisco and Chicago.

And Canadians will be able to fly nonstop to Tulum from Toronto.

Booking availability and flight frequency have not yet been released for these new routes, but more information is expected to be released in the coming months.

Aeroméxico is a codeshare with Delta Air Lines, so travelers will be able to book their flights and earn loyalty miles through either airline.

Easier Than Ever To Reach Tulum

These new direct flight routes to Tulum will make it much easier to reach this popular beach destination.

Tulum Beach

Once a quiet coastal town, Tulum has exploded in popularity over the past decade, becoming one of the biggest tourist hotspots in Mexico. Tulum is known for its beautiful beaches, trendy restaurants and boutiques, beach clubs, and high-end nightlife.

Not only is Tulum located on the coast with access to some of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches, but it’s also within close proximity to ancient Mayan ruins and jungle cenotes (natural swimming holes.)

For travelers who enjoy luxury, Tulum is a great destination, with many resorts and upscale boutique hotels.

However, getting to Tulum is currently somewhat time-consuming.

The nearest international airport to Tulum is in Cancun, some 74.5 miles (120 kilometers) north of Tulum. Cancun also happens to be the most-visited destination in Mexico, with an extremely busy international airport.

This means travelers can end up waiting a long time in line for immigration and customs just to leave the airport.

From there, it can take two hours (or even longer, depending on traffic) to reach Tulum by car or bus.

New Tulum Airport Opening

The opening of Tulum International Airport will drastically cut down on travel time to reach Tulum. Instead of having to fly into Cancun, travelers can arrive directly in Tulum.

Construction of the new airport began in 2021, and while it originally wasn’t supposed to open until 2024, it’s now expected to begin operation on December 1 of this year.

This means travelers planning a winter trip to Tulum will be able to fly directly to their final destination instead of having to transit through Cancun.

Although the only flights announced from the U.S. and Canada so far are San Francisco, Chicago, and Toronto on Aeroméxico, more routes are likely to be announced in the coming months.

Tulum is a popular destination that will become easier to reach than ever with the launch of these new flight routes at the new international airport.

The opening of the airport will also coincide with the launch of the new Maya Train, an ambitious rail project that will connect many destinations around the states of Quintana Roo (where Tulum is located), Yucatan, and Campeche.
